DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Detroit Lakes played typical Lakers football, pounding the ball with an effective run game while the defense recorded a shutout in a 20-0 victory over Fargo North on Friday night at Mollberg Field.
“We always have that goal to be the biggest, baddest defense, and I think we proved it tonight big time,” DL senior Sam Champa said.
Parker Jackson was a workhorse in the backfield for the Lakers, rushing 22 times for 149 yards and a touchdown.
“The line really started pushing and I had plenty of holes,” Jackson said. “It made my job easy.”
Fullback Forrest Schleske got DL on the scoreboard on a 3-yard plunge with 11 minutes, 31 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Typical first-game jitters kept the Lakers from putting up more points early.
“We just shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers and penalties, and you can’t do that,” DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher said. “Our defense held us in the game until we got going in the second half. We figured it out and started moving the ball in the second half. The defense played great the whole game.”
DL went into halftime leading 7-0 and scored its second touchdown on a two-play drive that lasted all of 22 seconds after getting the ball on the Spartans’ 37-yard line after a punt return.
DL quarterback Christian Hedstrom hit Ryan Cihak with a 19-yard pass, and Jackson rumbled in on the next play from 18 yards out to put the Lakers up 14-0.
Fargo North battled the Lakers’ front line, trying to get a running game established throughout a lengthy third quarter, failing to get past midfield.
Champa scored on a
5-yard touchdown run with 5:07 remaining in the game after a 49-yard sprint down the left sideline to get inside the Spartans’ 10-yard line. Champa had nine rushes for 94 yards.
“That huge line up front got a lot of push and pretty much opened it up,” Champa said.
