Fargo's Andy Doeden had a solid start Tuesday in his quest to make the PGA Tour. Doeden shot one-under-par 71 in the first round of first-stage qualifying at Castle Hills Golf Club in Lewisville, Texas.
He is tied for 20th place. The top 20 and ties after four rounds advance to the second stage of qualifying, scheduled for early next month. Craig Van Horn of Shawnee, Okla., shot 66 to lead the field at Castle Hills.
Last week, Greg Hiller of Glen Ullin, N.D., failed to advance to the second stage after finishing tied for 33rd at a first-stage qualifier in Spring, Texas.
