Dragons basketball teams add 9 recruits

MOORHEAD — Minnesota State Moorhead announced that the Dragons men's basketball team has landed four recruits, while the women's team signed five.

The men's team added 6-foot-8 forward Owen Hektner from Fargo Davies High School; 7-foot center Chance Fazio from Fergus Falls (Minn.) High School; 6-1 guard Jordan Johnson from Elkhorn Area (Wis.) High School; and 6-1 guard Eddie Beeninga from Wayzata (Minn.) High School.

Hektner averaged 13 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as a junior.

"Owen is a tremendous addition to our basketball program," Dragons head coach Chad Walthall said in a press release. "He is a skilled forward that has always had a great investment into the game. We look forward to watching his development in a Dragon uniform as he continues to physically mature and get stronger."

Fazio was all-conference as a junior, averaging 15.9 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game. Johnson was first-team all-state, conference player of the year and team most valuable player, averaging 24.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists a game.

Eddie Beeninga is the younger brother of former Dragons guard Johnny Beeninga and current MSUM guard Jacob Beeninga. Eddie averaged 8.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as a senior.

Dragons women sign 5

The MSUM women's basketball team added five recruits for the 2021-22 season, head coach Karla Nelson announced.

Joining the team will be Raegan Alexander, a 6-foot forward from St. Louis Park (Minn.) High School; 5-8 guard Lizzie Berkvam from Lakeville North (Minn.) High School; 5-7 guard Macy Holtz from Plainview-Elgin-Millville (Minn.) High School; 5-7 guard Natalie Jens from Beaver Dam (Wis.) High School; and 5-11 forward Allisa Knight from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (Minn.) High School.

Alexander is a career 1,000-point scorer who averaged 16.9 points and 9.0 rebounds. She was all-conference and team MVP. Berkvam set the single-season assist record at Northfield as a sophomore and was all-conference honorable mention as a junior. Holtz is a 1,000-point scorer and three-time all-conference member who averaged 22.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 4.7 steals a game.

Jens was all-conference first team as a junior and WCBA and AP All-State honorable mention. She averaged 13.7 points, 3.0 rebound and 2.5 assists and steals per game. She was also part of two state title teams with a career record of 75-6. Knight helped B-B-E to its first state tournament appearance in program history, averaging 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
