BISMARCK — Edgeley-Kulm’s Isaac Huber didn’t come to the North Dakota Class B state track and field meet just to win another championship. He came to set a record.
Huber was oblivious to the cold, wind and rain that lashed the MDU Resources Community Bowl Friday and did indeed get the Class B 1,600-meter record he was chasing. Huber’s time of 4 minutes, 17.58 seconds eclipsed the old mark of 4:18.05 set in 2015 by Elliott Stone of Shiloh Christian.
“We went out pretty fast but the second lap was a little slow,” Huber said. “On the third lap, I thought I could go for it.”
Huber spent the first lap running behind New Town’s Jaiven Hale, who finished second in 4:24.70. But he moved into the lead on the back stretch of lap two and stayed in front the rest of the way. He had a five-yard lead at the bell but pulled away during the last 400 meters.

“It was a little windy and a little wet, but in North Dakota you can’t just hope for good weather because it’s not going to happen,” said Huber, who glanced at the clock as he made his final turn and thought he had a chance at the mark. “I looked at the clock and knew I could do it if I went hard. It was a pretty quick 100.”
And this record counted, unlike the record-breaking time he turned in at the prestigious Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D., earlier this spring.
“I PR’d here. It feels good to get the win,” Huber said.
Thompson’s Krack defends 1,600 title
Thompson’s Lana Krack felt the same way as she defended her state title in the 1,600 as well.
Krack’s time of 5:04.38 shaved three seconds off her personal record and marked the first time this season she bested her winning time of last year. Unlike Huber, she had no competition after the first lap.
Krack said she actually celebrated when she woke up and saw the weather forecast.
“I love this weather,” Krack said. “This is honestly my favorite, drizzling and 50 degrees. When I saw the forecast, I thought ‘yes, this is good. I can do this.’”
Krack said patience was the key.

“I like to keep it controlled in the first lap,” Krack said. “I tried to rein it in the first lap. You can make it real miserable if you go out too fast. Usually once I get past the first lap it’s pretty good.”
Krack later ran a leg on the winning 3,200-meter relay in 10:04.33. Her teammates were Claire Snyder, Kaela Schultz and Emma Cullen.
Pastian pulls off upset in discus
Hillsboro-Central Valley’s Kaden Pastian pulled off a minor upset in the discus, beating top qualifier Austin Widmer of Fargo Oak Grove. Pastian’s winning toss was 180 feet, 4 inches.
“Me and Austin have been battling all year,” Pastian said. “This went back and forth as well. It’s awesome to have that competition. My second-to-last throw is always my best. This one was, too.”
