Free agent outfielder and first baseman Darin Erstad agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, MLB.com reported. Major League Baseball's Web site said the deal is pending an Erstad physical, scheduled for later in the week.

Erstad, a native of Jamestown, N.D., had spent his entire 11-year career with the Los Angeles Angels. He helped lead the franchise to its only World Series title in 2002.

Erstad, 32, saw limited action last season due to an ankle injury that required surgery. His father, Chuck, told Jamestown's KQDJ radio that his son now feels well enough to play every day, but was told by the Angels that he likely would be used only part time if he re-signed with them.

The elder Erstad said his son turned down a one-year offer from the Oakland last week.

Darin Erstad, a two-time All-Star, has one Gold Glove as a first baseman and one as an outfielder.

He is a two-time All-Star with a career batting average of .286. His career postseason average is .339.

The contract agreement came on the same day as it was announced White Sox outfielder Scott Podsednik will be out six to eight weeks after having groin surgery.

Podsednik, a star in the 2005 World Series who slumped last season, had surgery this week and is expected to be sidelined when spring training starts next month.
