Fargo Force falls short in weekend opener at Des Moines

The Force's rally from a two-goal deficit fell short in the first game of a two-game series with the Buccaneers.

Des Moines, Iowa — Kyle Smolen's unassisted goal midway through the third period gave Fargo some life but the Force ultimately fell 4-2 to Des Moines on Friday in the opener of a two-game weekend series at Buccaneer Arena.

After Sully Scholle put Des Moines ahead 1-0 in the first, Fargo's Bret Link tied it with his seventh goal of the season at 17:26 of the first period on assists from Cole Knuble and Trevor Griebel.

But the Buccaneers' Davis Burnside scored late in the second period and teammate Tanner Latsch scored early in the third for a 3-1 lead. Smolen scored at 9:11 of the third to tighten things up but the Buccaneers' Scout Truman pocketed an empty-netter with seven seconds to play.

The Force and Buccaneers tangle again at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, in Des Moines.
