FARGO – Fargo North guard Siman Sem is not going far to play basketball when he finishes his Spartans career in two years. He committed to North Dakota State on Wednesday.
The Bison have been paying close attention to Sem since his freshman season. He’ll be a junior next year.
“The coaches at NDSU made me feel comfortable and being able to play in my hometown is nice,” Sem said. “They thought I would be a great fit for their team.”
The 6-foot-3 Sem averaged 9.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season for the Spartans. He shot 42 percent from the field.
Sem said NDSU was the only school to offer him a scholarship and the school was the most active in recruiting him, often attending his AAU and high school games. Northern Iowa and the University of South Dakota were other Division I programs recruiting Sem.
“The sky’s the limit as far as athleticism,” said Lucas Moormann, coach for Sem’s ECI Basketball summer team. “He’s really aggressive and you don’t see that in a kid his age a lot of the time.”
Sem is the first Bison commitment for the class of 2017. He plays in a summer program that also produced NDSU players Dexter Werner and A.J. Jacobson.
“It’s cool that guys from this program keep heading that way,” said Moormann, a former NDSU player.
Sem is currently sidelined with a meniscus injury. Moormann said he hopes to get him back by the end of June or the beginning of July.
“He’s a scorer and we have a pretty good team in that group,” Moormann said. “He’s our main threat and he can do everything now. He’s shooting better from 3-point land and his first step is pretty quick, so he’s able to get by guys.”
Sem is North’s first Division I commitment since forward Tyler Koenig went to Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2003 and Jordan May to the University of North Dakota in 2008.
“I’m happy for Siman and his family,” said former Fargo North boys basketball coach Dan Shultis, who coached Sem the last two seasons. “He has come a long way as a player the last two seasons. NDSU is going to enjoy having him around. Siman is just starting to tap into the type of player he is going to become. Being close to home at NDSU is only going to help him become a better player.”
Moormann said a lot of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools were recruiting Sem, although he said that was mainly because NDSU was on him right away.
