FARGO — Fargo South High School named former Fargo Shanley High School girls tennis coach Samuel Burns as the Bruins' new head girls tennis coach for the 2021 season, according to a Tuesday press release.

Burns will replace Vic Youngs, the decorated former South boys tennis coach, who was serving as the interim girls head tennis coach for the 2020 season. The 2020 spring girls high school tennis season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burns is currently a physical education and health teacher at Fargo Oak Grove Lutheran School, where he has taught since 2016. He was the head girls tennis coach at Shanley from 2015 through 2020. Burns resigned as head coach at Shanley in June . He served as a tennis instructor with Moorhead Parks and Recreation from 2012 through 2014, and also coached basketball at Sullivan Middle School from 2015 through 2019.

Burns is a Moorhead High School graduate and received his bachelor's degree in physical education from North Dakota State.

"Mr. Burns brings a great deal of tennis coaching experience to the Bruin girls tennis team with a strong passion for the sport," Fargo South activities coordinator Mike Beaton said in the press release. "His coaching experience at the high school level and in the Eastern Dakota Conference are great assets to our girls tennis program. We look forward to his leadership as our girls tennis coach, and his guidance in helping the players grow as athletes and people."
