WEST FARGO - A week after struggling in the trenches against the top-ranked team in North Dakota Class 3A, the West Fargo Sheyenne football team reversed course in a big way against Bismarck Legacy on Friday.

The fourth-ranked Mustangs rushed for 325 yards and scored on their first five possessions en route to a 47-7 blowout win.

Following a game in which Bismarck Century outgained Sheyenne 246-37 on the ground, the Mustangs imposed their will on the Sabers from the start, outrushing them 137 to negative-11 in the first half.

Nathan Goldade had 70 of his 131 yards in the opening 24 minutes, scoring 2-yard touchdowns on the team's first and last drives of the half. He continued his strong play in the second half, breaking off a 37-yard run on the first play of the third quarter.

Afterwards, Goldade deflected most of the credit to his offensive line, which easily controlled the line of scrimmage.

"The line did an amazing job," he said. "They did all the dirty work. They made my job so much easier."

Hunter Hoffner, who added 90 yards to the attack, followed Goldade's 37-yard run with a 23-yard score on a jet sweep on the ensuing play, the Mustangs' fifth touchdown in as many possessions.

Disappointed with last week's 21-14 overtime loss, Mustang Coach Jeremy Newton said he was pleased with the business-like way his club responded.

"We kind of wanted to take care of our business and I think the guys did a good job of that," he said.

The passing game was also sharp, as quarterback Parker Sander was a perfect 5-of-5 through the air, including a pair of spectacular touchdown grabs by Tyler Terhark and Caden Jastram.

Terhark came back and caught and underthrown pass through contact from 29 yards out on the Mustang's second series, while Jastram pulled a ball off the helmet of a Saber defender for a 20-yard score on the next drive.

"We knew we weren't good on offense last week," Sander said. "Our defense came to play and we didn't. So we put our mindset to move the ball, let's do our assignments right, and we did."

The defense and special teams got into the act as well, holding Legacy to four yards rushing and scoring on a blocked punt that Matt Wegner recovered in the end zone.

"I'm just happy how they're progressing," Newton said of his defense. "They've got a bunch of guys that are playing for each other and they're working hard. Hopefully they keep it going."

The game was a big tuneup for the Mustangs, who take on crosstown rival West Fargo next Friday.

With the struggling Packers off to an 0-2 start, Sheyenne looks to be in position to earn its first win against its in-city rival, an opportunity the players are looking forward to.

"This game has been in the back of my head since day one," Goldade said. "I'm excited we've got a week to prepare and I can't wait to go out (next) Friday night."
