SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Fargo Invaders claimed the Northern Elite Football League Championship on Saturday night at Heelan Memorial Field, securing a 16-7 victory against the Sioux City Stampede.
Defense led the way for the Invaders, allowing one touchdown, which came in the fourth quarter. The Invaders led 9-0 at halftime, but the Stampede made it a one-score game after Dorian Ballentine's rushing touchdown, cutting the lead to 9-7.
On fourth-and-goal with under two minutes to go, Invaders quarterback Ja'Vonte Johnson found wide out Jon Baune for a seven-yard touchdown pass to ice the outcome.
Johnson completed 21 of 46 passes for 331 yards with two touchdowns, and one interception. Baune led the wide receivers with eight receptions for 98 yards and one touchdown, while Dustin Lindgren rushed for 38 yards.
The Invaders held the Stampede to a 4-for-15 third-down conversion rate and outgained Sioux City 413-295 in total offense.
