FARGO -- The last year has been a stellar one for Shanley football. The Deacons have won their last 13 contests, including the 2018 Class AA state championship over Bismarck St. Mary's.
On Friday, they success of the program gets put to the test for the first time as a member of the EDC.
Troy Mattern's 2-0 squad goes head-to-head with Fargo South.
The Bruins come into the showdown at 2-0 as well, with a plethora of athletes on the field, highlighted by Sibomana Enock, Bless Flomo, and Danny Lahai.
"The biggest thing is their speed, they're able to fly around wherever the want to," said junior quarterback Cooper Mattern. "They have players that are just fast and make up a lot of things with their speed and we just have to be aware of that when we're out there."
For Troy Mattern, it'll be a homecoming of sorts. He was the head coach of the Bruins for seven seasons, leading the team to a AAA state championship in 2013.
"I've got a lot of respect for what they've continued to do since we left," the Shanley head coach said. "There's a lot of great memories and I probably wouldn't be here without my experience at south."
"I'm excited to go back it'll be a fun night and a great atmosphere and we're excited for a really good football game."
