MOORHEAD — Minnesota State Moorhead head coach Steve Laqua said the Dragons football team had 37 verbal commitments for the 2020 recruiting class as of Friday, Jan. 24, less than two weeks away from national signing day for NCAA Division II.

Laqua can't comment specifically on recruits until they have signed with the program. Division II has its signing day for football on Feb. 5.

"We've got to make sure that we increase athleticism on our team defensively," Laqua said was the overall theme for this recruiting class.

Laqua said the Dragons would likely add 35 to 40 players in the upcoming recruiting class — MSUM is in that target range with its current verbal commitments. That class size is by design, Laqua said, with hopes the current recruits will turn into a 20-to-25 player senior class for the Dragons down the road.

"We didn't do that fast enough," Laqua said of consistent larger recruiting classes. "We stayed too small too long. ... We are looking to put together back-to-back senior classes of 20-to-25 players."
