The Moorhead Spuds' home football game against Bemidji scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, has been canceled and the Spuds are making contacts throughout the region to find a replacement opponent.
The Bemidji Pioneer reported that Bemidji head coach Bryan Stoffel confirmed Tuesday that the cancellation was due to a COVID spread among Lumberjacks players but said he was not sure he could disclose the number of players affected. Stoffel said the team will continue to practice.
Moorhead Activities Director Dean Haugo said Moorhead is seeking a replacement opponent and has reached out to schools in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota but "no luck so far."
"We know it's an extreme long shot," he said.
During last year's prep football season, the likelihood of finding a replacement opponent would have been greater. That's not the case this year, Haugo said.
"Situations have changed, circumstances have changed," Haugo said, adding that he's heard of only a few game cancellations this season. "It's a very different environment ... Things are out of our control so we're moving on."
