FARGO - Saturday marked the third year in a row Grand Forks Red River and Fargo Shanley met in the East Region volleyball championship match.

And like the previous two championship meetings, the Roughriders emerged the victor.

Red River defeated the top-seeded Deacons 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 at Fargo Davies High School and will enter Thursday's Class A state tournament as the East's No. 1 seed.

Shanley had defeated Red River twice during the regular season, but that success didn't carry over in the postseason.

"We wanted to get the No. 1 seed because it looks better," Red River senior outside hitter Hadley Steffen said. "Shanley beat us the last two times we have played them and we pulled through."

The Roughriders play No. 4 West-seeded Bismarck at noon Thursday during the state quarterfinals at Minot State University.

Steffen, who is committed to playing volleyball at NCAA Division I North Dakota State, posted 21 kills, 22 digs and three ace serves for Red River (22-9).

Shanley opened with a win in the first set, but the Roughriders stormed back.

"They were ready for us," Shanley head coach Curt Johnson said. "I'm proud of my girls. We went down swinging."

Sophomore middle blocker Alivia Fraase had 24 kills, 25 digs and two blocks for the Deacons (22-9).

Shanley plays No. 3 West-seeded Dickinson at 8 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

"We kept playing hard," Johnson said. "They fought back hard and did not roll over. A couple blocks here and a couple balls in and we are playing a fifth set. ... We just didn't get a couple breaks here and there."

Jessica Anderson added eight kills and two blocks for Shanley.
