CHICAGO — The Chicago Steel scored the only goal in a shootout for a 3-2 victory over Fargo in the Force's 2021-2022 season opener on Saturday night at FedEx Rink 1.
Trailing 1-0 midway through the third period, the Force's Tanner Walos and Andre Gasseau scored about three minutes apart to take the lead. But Chicago's Jack Harvey scored at 19:24 to force overtime.
The Steel's Adam Fantilli scored an unassisted goal shorthanded at 13:38 of the second period. Walos scored the game-tying goal at 10:07 of the third on assists from Charlie Lurie and Trevor Griebel, and Gasseau scored the go-ahead goal on assists from Bret Link and Cole Knuble.
Either both teams had excellent penalty kills or unproductive power plays. The Steel were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Force was 0-for-3.
Force goalie Anton Castro made 15 saves and Steel goalie Gibson Homer stopped 25 shots.
The Force play Team USA at FedEx Rink 1 at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, in Chicago.
