MINOT, N.D. - Trailing by two in the final set didn't have Addie Eamon worried.
It didn't seem to faze her teammates, either.
The Blue Jays rallied behind three kills and a block by Eamon in the final set as Jamestown won its first state volleyball championship in five sets over Bismarck Century on Saturday night at the Minot State Dome.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20 and 15-12.
"We knew what we had to do," Eamon said. "It's incredible. It's like a weight off my shoulders. I'm so proud of my team."
It's Jamestown's first team championship since 2005, when the girls cross country team won state. The Blue Jays had never played in the championship bracket prior to this year's trip.
"I know we had our town's support in this game," Eamon said. "I'm just glad we persevered."
Eamon hammered 24 kills, but the biggest kill was the last. Alaina Furcht drew Century within one at 13-12 with a kill, but Eamon followed with a no-doubter. A Century hitting error sealed the championship for the Blue Jays (35-4).
Eamon and fellow seniors McKayla Orr and Josie Hegerle were named to the all-state team. Hegerle was the Class A senior athlete of the year.
"What a great way for them to finish their careers," Jamestown coach Sara Hegerle said. "These kids have done all the work they've needed to do to be in that position and then to be successful as well."
Century led 9-7 in the fifth set thanks to Katie Scherr's kill, but Eamon rotated back in and took over. She had a block to tie it at 10, a kill tied it at 11 and her kills made for the 13th and 14th points.
It may not have been possible if not for Orr, who dug two balls off the floor that would have allowed Century to tie it at 12.
"It was really intense," Orr said. "We just needed to push toward the end. We both battled it out."
Sara Hegerle didn't feel good about her team losing the opening set. Jamestown beat Century twice in the regular season, and both times, the Blue Jays got out to fast starts.
"I felt we were shaky," Hegerle said. "That's why I can't believe we won. It felt like we were behind all the time. The kids felt the same way, then something came up in them. It's a belief in what we're doing."
Century's Katie Scherr had a team-best 17 kills in the loss.
Patriots co-coach Jamie Zastoupil didn't have any hard feelings.
"It was two really good teams fighting it out until the end, and that's what you got," Zastoupil said. "This is what state championship games should look like."
