JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Dickinson coach Dave Michaelson went for the win.
The Jamestown defense denied the Midgets and their coach's gutsy call.
Going for the win after a stunning late rally, Dickinson fullback Cole Frenzel was stopped 1 yard short of a game-winning two-point conversion, giving the Blue Jays a wild 28-27 Class 3A play-in game victory at Ernie Gates Field on Tuesday and the right to play top-ranked Fargo South on Saturday night at the Fargodome.
Seemingly in control after a touchdown pass from Zec Tahran to Ross Hogan late in the fourth quarter made it 28-14, Dickinson quarterback Ben Herauf's 35-yard scoring strike to Tyler Steffan on 4th-and-10 cut the JHS lead to 28-27.
Instead of forcing overtime with an extra-point kick, Michaelson rolled the dice and went for the win. But Frenzel was pulled down by linebacker Blake Hochhalter and defensive end Robert Regan inside the 1-yard line.

"We felt like we were on a roll and had momentum on our side," Michaelson said. "It was a tough call. If you don't make it, you second-guess the heck out of yourself. We came up just short."
The Midgets still had one more chance after recovering an onside kick. But Herauf's last-second heave to the end zone was knocked down, allowing JHS coach Bill Cahill and the Blue Jay faithful to breath again, ending a classic between the two teams.
"It was a great game to be apart of," Cahill said.
"We've been on the other end of games like this. We feel for Dickinson, but we're awfully happy for our kids."
