Jimmies fall in title tilt
JAMESTOWN, N.D. - For the second straight weekend, Jamestown College ran into a hot baseball team.
Unfortunately for the Jimmies, this time it brought their season to an end.
A week after Mayville State put together four strong games to win the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament, Dakota State needed just three, rolling to the Region III baseball tournament title at Jack Brown Stadium.
Dakota State finished its unbeaten weekend by defeating Jamestown College 13-6 in the championship game.
The Trojans, who defeated Si Tanka-Huron once and Jamestown College twice, advance to the NAIA Super Regional for the second time in the last three years.
The weekend sweep of the Jimmies (35-14-1) was a reversal of fortunes for the Trojans (34-14) after losing 11 of the last 12 meetings between the two teams the last two years.
The loss was a tough pill for the Jimmies to swallow after winning the DAC-10 regular season title only to go 4-4 in the postseason.
"As a team, I don't think we ever expected this to happen. I think we're a little stunned," Jamestown coach Tom Hager said. "You have to give Dakota State a lot of credit, they came in and played great baseball."
Craig Talbot and Shaw combined for a strong pitching performance to keep the Jimmies in the tournament.
Jamestown College defeated Mayville State despite leaving eight runners on base, six of which were in scoring position. It was the second straight win for the Jimmies over the Comets and fourth of the season.
Dakota State put themselves in the driver's seat in the tournament, beating Jamestown College in a winner's bracket game Saturday night.
Freshman Jason Ciz was in control on the mound for the Trojans, going the distance.
He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out five.
