Legion baseball: Moorhead Blues fall twice in Omaha tournament

Moorhead fell to Brookings and Roncalli at the Battle of Omaha tournament

OMAHA, Neb. — The Moorhead Blues fell 7-4 to Brookings, and 11-8 to Roncalli to finish out play at the Battle of Omaha American Legion baseball tournament Saturday.

A five-run third inning for Brookings broke a 2-2 tie in the Blues' opening game. Wyatt Tweet, Hayden Netland and Carson Zimmel all totaled two hits for Moorhead. Netland and Zimmel each had a double, while Skyler Timmer got the start on the mound, allowing seven runs off nine hits through six innings.

Moorhead had leads in multiple innings against Roncalli, but was unable to hold on after leading 6-4 and 8-7. Roncalli plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning that sealed the win, despite 15 hits from the Blues.

Ryan Luthi recorded two doubles and two RBIs to lead Moorhead. Kaleb Hodges added a hit and two RBIs, while Riley Krueger scored two runs and added a pair of hits.

The Blues finished 1-3 in the tournament, and play Thief River Falls in a doubleheader Tuesday, June 29.
