Legion baseball: Moorhead Blues win big twice in The Pete's first day

The Blues scored 34 runs in their two pool-play victories over Sioux Falls East and Winnipeg South on Thursday.

MOORHEAD — The Moorhead Blues' offense was at its finest on Thursday on the opening day of the Jim Pettersen Invitational American Legion tournament.

The Blues defeated Sioux Falls East 17-4 to open the tournament, then knocked off Winnipeg South 17-7 in their evening game of "The Pete" at Mattson Field.

Against Sioux Falls East, the Blues scored twice in the first inning, four in the second and put the game away with a 10-run third.

Carson Zimmel had a two-run double and an rbi single, and Jacob Hendrickson had a two-run triple and finished with three RBIs.

Carter Heinsch singled in two runs and Aaron Reierson doubled in two runs and had three RBIs in the game.

Against Winnipeg, the Blues all but salted the game away with a nine-run first inning.

Hendrickson doubled in two runs and tripled in two runs in two first inning at bats.

Zimmel had three RBI singles and Gavin Gast doubled in a run and singled in a run. Brett Letness tripled in two runs, Justin Stalboerger singled in two runs and Jackson Young doubled in a run.

The Blues play Gillette (Wyoming) at 3:30 p.m. and Bloomington at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 1, at Matson Field.
