FARGO - Bill Lopez, a former area basketball referee, died Thursday at his home. He was 57.

Lopez was president and CEO of ShareHouse, a nonprofit organization that provides chemical dependency treatment services. He also was president of the Red River Valley Officials Association.

Lopez was a longtime official of area basketball games. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in January 2012.

Lopez was described as highly respected in the officiating world prior to a benefit for him earlier this year.

"He always enjoyed the interactions with the kids and the schools," Jeremy Carney, who worked games with Lopez for more than 10 years, said earlier this year.
