Mandan tops Fargo Shanley-Oak Grove in quarterfinals of ND Class A state baseball tournament

FARGO -- Mandan defeated Fargo-Shanley Oak Grove 3-0 during the quarterfinals do the North Dakota Class A baseball state tournament on Friday at Newman Outdoor Field.

With the victory, Mandan (22-9) advances to play the winner of Jamestown and West Fargo later today in the semifinals. First pitch is set for approximately 7:30 p.m.

The game between the Braves and Deacons was originally scheduled for Thursday, but lightning and heavy rain delayed the final two opening-round games of the tournament.

Mandan scored its first run in the second inning. Junior second baseman Garrett Murphy drew a walk with two outs and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of junior outfielder Jarad Zittleman.

The Braves’ second run came an inning later when senior outfielder Parker Harm scored on a delayed steal of home.

Later in the sixth inning, Mandan sophomore third baseman Ty Leingang connected for an RBI single that scored Jeremy Friesz.

Mandan starting pitcher Trever Leingang struck out three batters and only allowed the Deacons one hit in 6 ⅔ innings.

Shanley-Oak Grove got two runners on base in the seventh inning courtesy of walks, but was unable to extend the rally.

The Deacons play the loser of the Jamestown-West Fargo quarterfinal in the consolation semifinals later this afternoon.
