Moorhead pole vaulters place first and second at section track meet

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- Connor Salisbury and Kyle Johnson of Moorhead placed first and second in the pole vault at Wednesday's Minnesota Class 2A Section 8 track meet to qualify for the state meet.

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- Connor Salisbury and Kyle Johnson of Moorhead placed first and second in the pole vault at Wednesday’s Minnesota Class 2A Section 8 track meet to qualify for the state meet.

Salisbury and Johnson each cleared 13 feet, 11 inches to equal the qualifying standard for the Minnesota state track and field meets that will be held June 5-6 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

The boys pole vault was one of six events that were finals. The remainder of Wednesday’s events were preliminaries for the second day of the section meet that will be held Saturday at Rocori.

In another finals event, Allison Berg of Detroit Lakes placed first in the girls long jump with a leap of 18 feet, ½ inch -- surpassing the state qualifying standard of 17 feet, 2 inches.

In the 3200-meter run finals, Moorhead’s Mackenzie Kelly placed fourth in the girls division (11:37.02) while Moorhead’s Elijah Herrick placed fifth in the boys division (9:51.75).

In the boys 100-meter dash preliminaries, Moorhead’s Devante Delburne placed first (11.23 seconds) while teammates Malique Delbrune and Jade Lawrence placed fourth and fifth respectively. Delbrune and Lawrence also advanced in the 200 meter dash prelims placing third and fourth respectively.

Moorhead’s Eric Gibbons placed first in the 800-meter run prelims in a time of 1 minute, 59.71 seconds.
