It seemed like "just yesterday" to Moorhead High School senior Ashley Stenerson when she first slipped on a Spuds sweater and skated with the varsity team as an eighth-grader. And now, the school's all-time leading scorer is headed to her dream destination.

The University of Minnesota women's hockey team announced Wednesday that Stenerson would be among its incoming freshmen class this fall.

Stenerson's signing caps two years of interest between the two sides.

"Growing up in Minnesota, I've always wanted to be a Gopher," said Stenerson, whose older brother, Matt, lives in the Twin Cities. "I love the school. I love the atmosphere. I love the city of Minneapolis."

Stenerson finished her senior season as Moorhead's career leader in points.

She said she's looking forward to joining the Gophers and working with their coaches. She credits Spuds head coach Jim MacFarlane for her successful career.

In joining the Gophers, Stenerson will be playing at one of the premier women's hockey programs in the country. Minnesota has appeared in back-to-back Frozen Fours and won back-to-back national championships in 2004 and 2005.

"We are very happy to be adding Ashley to our Gopher women's hockey program," Minnesota head coach Brad Frost said in a news release. "... Ashley has wanted to be a Gopher and I know that she will take great pride in wearing the 'M'."
