FARGO – North Dakota State backup quarterback Derek McGinnis is leaving the team, said Bison head coach Chris Klieman. The sophomore was the third string at his position behind junior Carson Wentz and freshman Cole Davis.

McGinnis, from Crete, Neb., did not attempt a pass in his two seasons. He redshirted in 2012 and was in a battle for the backup job to Wentz this season. He appeared in just one game against the University of The Incarnate Word.

Klieman also said backup tight end Justin Axelson will not return to the team. The redshirt freshman did not see action this season other than appearing in the Incarnate Word game.
