Fargo Shanley led by 15 points less than 5½ minutes into the first half Thursday at the Shanley gym. West Fargo couldn't recover.

The Deacons scored 16 of the first 17 points and held off a late West Fargo surge to score a 56-49 victory in Eastern Dakota Conference girls basketball.

"We just have so much confidence going into the game," said Shanley junior Lauren Carew, who scored 16 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added five assists. "We're revved up and ready to go."

Ranked No. 4 in this week's North Dakota Class A poll, Shanley (4-1, 3-0 EDC) handed West Fargo (2-2, 2-1) its first conference loss.

"It's tough because you are digging out of the hole the whole time," said West Fargo coach Lynette Mund, whose team never led.

The 6-foot-1 Carew and 6-1 Mara Paulson keyed Shanley's fast start. Carew scored the first two baskets of the game, both inside the paint. Paulson netted eight points, all in the lane, in the opening rally. She hit a short jumper from the middle of the lane with 12 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Deacons a 16-1 lead.

"They just kind of overpowered us," Mund said.

The Packers used a string of 11 consecutive points in the second half to close within three points of the lead. Jo Jo Haerter scored seven points in that stretch, including a 3-pointer from the left wing. She paced the Packers with 13 points.

Haerter scored a basket on a slick spin move in the lane to cut the Shanley lead to 49-46 with 3:17 to play.

"Our girls battled back and they didn't quit and we're proud of that," Mund said.

However, Carew scored the next four points, including a put-back with 2:12 to play that ended six minutes of scoreless basketball for Shanley.

"It's just kind of a mental thing, it's something that we can correct," Carew said. "That's just confidence in yourself and having the guts to keep going."
