North standouts spark 'A' girls

Fargo North standouts Carissa Jahner, and twin sisters Kayla and Katie Dahlen didn't set out to take over Wednesday night's Lions All-Star basketball game.

Fargo North standouts Carissa Jahner, and twin sisters Kayla and Katie Dahlen didn't set out to take over Wednesday night's Lions All-Star basketball game.

Unfortunately for the Class B All-Stars, that's exactly what happened.

The Spartan trio, who all earned opportunities to play Division II basketball this season, combined for 40 points to lead Class A to a 71-56 victory against Class B at Fargo Civic Center.

The victory snapped the Class B team's three-game winning streak against Class A.

Jahner and Kayla Dahlen each finished with 13 points. Katie Dahlen led the team with 14, including three from beyond the arc.

"This is kind of our home court," said Jahner, last season's Ms. Basketball. "We've played here a lot more than the other girls. We all wanted to do well."

The teams entered halftime tied at 30.

Katie Dahlen scored eight points in the first half to lead the Class A stars. The Class B team was paced by Gackle-Streeter standout Amy Groth. Groth connected on four outside shots for eight points before the break.

Class A used a 17-2 run to open up the game in the second half.

The Class B team was held scoreless for more than four minutes during the Class A run.

Groth and Mallory Undlin finished with 10 points each to lead Class B.

Jamie Goehner of Jamestown had 11 points and three rebounds.

"We were just a step slow tonight," Class B coach Keith Jacobson said. "And the North kids played very well."

This won't be the North trio's final game together, however.

Jahner is a senior-to-be at North Dakota, and Katie and Kayla Dahlen both signed to play at North Dakota State.

The rival schools, both in the North Central Conference, play each other twice a year.

"It was a lot of fun," Jahner said. "Having three from the same team really helped us on the court."
