GRAND FORKS - A day after failing to solve Devils Lake goalie Holden Kurtz despite firing 41 shots on net, the Grand Forks Red River boys hockey team was willing to take a goal of any variety.

GRAND FORKS - A day after failing to solve Devils Lake goalie Holden Kurtz despite firing 41 shots on net, the Grand Forks Red River boys hockey team was willing to take a goal of any variety.

So when the Roughriders scored in the first period as a result of West Fargo accidentally redirecting a pass into the net, Red River wasn’t concerned with the style points.

The early power-play goal highlighted a two-goal first period that carried Red River to a 3-0 win over West Fargo on Saturday in a state-qualifying game at the East Region tournament in Purpur Arena.

Red River, which improved to 18-5-1, will be the No. 3 seed in next weekend’s state tournament in Fargo. In the quarterfinals, the Riders will face the loser of the East Region championship between Bismarck High and Bismarck Century.

“Red River came out on fire for the first five or six minutes,” West Fargo co-head coach Tim Capouch said. “Once it’s 2-0, it’s a little late to settle in.
