GRAND FORKS-Park River's Adam Zavalney noticed a pitching change for Kindred, and he thought he would grab a heavier bat.

Instead of the usual 33-ounce bat, he picked up a 34-ounce one. The extra weight was a good choice.

Zavalney slugged a two-run home run over the right-field fence to spark a four-run fourth and give the Pirates some cushion in a 7-2 victory over Kindred in winners' bracket play at the North Dakota Class A American Legion state baseball tournament at Kraft Field on Friday.

"I ended up getting under it and hit it out," Zavalney said.

Zavalney and his twin brother Nathan, who just finished their sophomore year of high school, were the battery mates for the Pirates.

"(Adam) has got a good, smooth swing," Park River coach Brady Laxdal said. "He's a big lefty, and he caught one and sent it over the fence. (Nathan) showed up and battled. He struggled a little bit but he relied on his defense."

Kindred starting pitcher Brandon Roesler kept the Pirates off balance for much of the game, until Park River pulled away late.

"That Roesler kid can throw," Laxdal said. "He was one of the best we've seen in awhile."

Park River is now the lone unbeaten team remaining in the tournament. The Pirates will play the Bismarck Reps at 4 p.m. today.

"We battled," Laxdal said. "That was a good all-around game."

Said Kindred coach Josh Allmaras: "Three errors on the board and that killed us. Park River has a good team and they put a lot of pressure on us. We didn't get the outs that were presented to us. You give a good team like that extra outs, they make you pay."

The Vikings play Casselton at 1 p.m. today.

"We're going to give it all we've got," Allmaras said. "We're excited to be this far in the tournament but our goal is still the same."
