ST. PAUL, Minn. - Pins aren't everything.
Perham scored bonus points in only two matches - a pair of major decisions - but did enough to notch a 29-19 win over Scott West in the Class 2A semifinals at Xcel Energy Center on Friday.
"When you win nine or 10 matches, you shouldn't need a lot of bonus points," Perham coach Robb Moser said. "We didn't give up many, either. We just kind of went to work."
Perham won the first four matches to open a 13-0 lead, but then Scott West won four in a row, including a pin at 145, to take a 15-13 edge.
Then the big guns came. The Yellowjackets had state qualifiers in the next four matches and took four straight decisions.
"If it's close when we get down there, we're expecting to win," said 171-pounder Mac Stoll, who tallied a 9-5 win over Kyle McDermand. "It helps having that depth, and we're confident in those big weights."
Scott West won by major decision at 215, but Casey Sazama wrapped up the win with a major of his own at heavyweight.
"It's hard for teams to get a lot of momentum going against us," Moser said. "We stop a lot of it because if you're going to win five in a row against us, they're going to have to be some pretty high-quality kids."
It's the second straight trip to the title match for the Yellowjackets, who lost to St. Michael-Albertville in last year's final, 28-25.
"That gives us tons of motivation," Stoll said. "I've been here with the team four times, and we've never won it, and we're here for that victory. That's too many times not taking it home."
Perham will take on Simley in today's Class 2A championship. Simley downed Milaca-Faith Christian 35-18 in the other semifinal.
Top-ranked Jackson County Central had too much firepower for Frazee, and second-ranked Canby handled New York Mills in the Class 1A semifinals.
Jackson County Central won eight matches - including three by pin and three by technical fall - to down the Hornets 40-22.
Canby won nine of the 14 matches against New York Mills, using three pins along the way for a 36-18 win over the Eagles.
New York Mills and Frazee will face each other for third place in Class 1A at 10 a.m. today.
