Peterson's first game memorable: Spuds to play on FSN twice this weekend

In a 127-73 road victory, Peterson's Hawley Nuggets:

- posted the 10th highest point total in Minnesota boys basketball history

- made 50 field goals, seventh all-time

- broke the mark for steals at 38

- and tallied 38 assists, second most ever.

Plus, Peterson prevented his dad, Staples-Motley's Lynn Peterson, from becoming the fourth coach to earn 600 career victories.

"Basically, what it came down to was their weaknesses were our strengths and it was an absolutely perfect formula for what happened," Trevor Peterson said. "I doubt it will ever be duplicated."

Yes, the Nintendo-numbers had something to do with the Cardinals' shoot-as-fast-as-possible style borrowed from Grinnell (Iowa) College. Yes, prep games are 4 minutes longer this season and split into halves instead of quarters.

But so far in the young season, nobody has come within 18 points of matching what Hawley did against S-M.

"That'd be great," said Andrew VanHavermaet, who broke school records for points (48) and steals (16). "It's just a blast. There were a lot of comments (from fans) about how they like the up-tempo style."

Apparently, Fox Sports Net North believes the new-look Moorhead boys hockey team is ready for primetime.

The regional sports channel confirmed Wednesday that it will air both of theNo. 4-ranked Spuds' games this weekend.

Friday's game at No. 14 Grand Rapids will be broadcast live at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's 2 p.m. tilt at No. 7 Duluth East will be shown on tape delay at 7:30 p.m.

The latter was a last-minute replacement after the network ran into logistical issues with the Hibbing at Roseau game.

"Hopefully, people won't get tired of seeing us," said Spuds coach Dave Morinville, whose team will play in four of the 16 games FSN will air this season. "I think it's just great for high school hockey and I know they wanted to do some more northern teams because people in the (Twin) Cities don't get a chance to see anybody."

Senior forward Taylor Huseby, who has signed with Southwest Minnesota State, became the fourth Pelican Rapids boys basketball player to score 1,000 career points, Tuesday against Ulen-Hitterdal. ... The Barnesville wrestling team won its invitational tournament for the first time in the event's10-year history Saturday. In the process, the Class 1A Trojans (11-0) beat Detroit Lakes, which is ranked Lean and Mean in the Class 2A poll, and Class 1A Lean and Mean Wheaton/Herman-Norcross, plus seven individuals finished 4-0.
