North Dakota State went on a second-half soccer attack Sunday afternoon against the University of North Dakota.

And for a while, the Bison had the Sioux on their heels.

But the foot of UND sophomore forward Stephanie Pfeiffer thwarted NDSU's strategy -- and ultimately cost them a victory. Pfeiffer's breakaway goal with seven minutes left in the game broke a tie and sent the Sioux to a 4-2 North Central Conference victory.

The Bison, down 2-1 at halftime, put an additional player on offense to start the second half.

"We pushed a third player up front," NDSU head coach Matt Townsend said.

It worked.

NDSU's Carly Christensen booted home Amy Masterson's corner kick 20 minutes into the half. It came after consistent NDSU pressure on the Sioux defense.

"We just should have kept it going a little longer," Christensen said.

But Pfeiffer got behind the Bison defense for her second goal of the game.

The Sioux added another three minutes later to seal their seventh victory in 11 games. They are 3-2 in the league.

NDSU fell to 5-7-1, 1-4 in the conference. It was its third straight solid game, but NDSU has only one win to show for it.

"We're losing games that we should be winning," Christensen said. "But we're still staying mentally strong as a team."

It put to rest any NDSU hopes of making the postseason. Pfeiffer made sure of it with her 13th goal.
