FARGO — Fargo Shanley quarterback Michael Rostberg has verbally committed to play football for the University of St. Thomas, he announced Monday, Aug. 1, via social media.

Deacons head coach Troy Mattern said Rostberg has distinctive arm talent. He compared Rostberg's arm strength to Fargo South graduate Griffin Neal and Bismarck Century graduate Carson Wentz, who is now in the NFL. Wentz played at North Dakota State and Neal played for Concordia College.

“What’s unique about Michael is No. 1 his arm strength,” Mattern said. “He’s got arm strength that I haven't seen in a long time in (North Dakota) high school football. It probably dates back to Carson Wentz and Griffin Neal. He’s in that category. He can make all the throws at the high school level.”

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Rostberg is heading into his senior season for the Deacons.

St. Thomas plays in the Pioneer Football League, a non-scholarship NCAA Division I league. The Tommies were 7-3 last season, including a 6-2 record in the Pioneer.

Rostberg said he also received interest from North Dakota State, South Dakota State and UND, but never received an official offer from those FCS programs. He added he had a good rapport with the St. Thomas coaching staff led by head coach Glenn Caruso.

"It had everything I wanted," Rostberg said. “I dreamed about playing D-I ball and that was my opportunity to play that. ... To be able to achieve that goal is very special to me."

Rostberg didn't start playing quarterback until his freshman year in high school, so the best football is still ahead for the rising senior, Mattern said.

“Once he got into our program as a freshman, we moved him to quarterback and he’s thrived ever since," Mattern said. “We’re really excited for what he’s going to bring this fall."

Rostberg has come a long way in his QB development in just a few years.

"My freshman year, I didn't even know what a three-step drop was and now I'm committed to a D-I school," Rostberg said. "It's pretty crazy."

Rostberg completed 142 of 238 passes for 1,666 yards and 13 touchdowns with seven interceptions in eight games last fall. He was a North Dakota Class 11AA first-team, all-state selection as a junior.

“I think what separates him is his arm strength and his size and some of the throws that you just don’t see high school kids making," Mattern said.

While it wasn't a priority, Rostberg is pleased to have his commitment in place prior to his final prep season.

“I did want to have that piece of mind coming into my senior season." Rostberg said. "It kind of felt right for me.”
