Girls tennis: Fargo Davies defends East Region tennis championship

The Eagles, after winning repeating as regular-season champs, edged West Fargo Sheyenne for the 2022 title on Thursday.

FARGO — Fargo Davies won a key singles point and swept both doubles matches to claim the East Region tournament championship 3-2 over West Fargo Sheyenne on Thursday.

The Eagles, who repeated as Eastern Dakota Conference regular-season champs, also repeated as tournament champs. They defeated Sheyenne 4-1 in the region championship match in 2021.

In Thursday's title match, defending state individual champion Mimi Gu of West Fargo Sheyenne won a second-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles to down Davies' Paige McCormick 6-1, 7-6. At No. 3 singles, the Mustangs' Sarea Gu claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win over Davies' Tanis Lee.

But the Eagles' Marissa Burian claimed a key point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sheyenne's Alyssa Sommerfeld at No. 2 singles.

In doubles, Davies' Lily Andrews and India Rohl scored a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Sheyenne's Jayne Thompson and Hailey Beeter. At No. 2, the Mustangs' Abby Timmerman and Sophie Layfield almost pressed Davies to a third set but the Eagles' Grace Wanzek and Lily Wicklow came through with a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
