Nordic skiing: Spuds' Zaine Braaten places seventh at Minnesota state meet

Braaten's finish on Thursday was the best by any Moorhead skier in the program's eight-year history.

BIWABIK, Minn. — Moorhead's Zaine Braaten placed seventh in the Boys Pursuit at the Minnesota State Nordic Ski Racing championships on Thursday at Giants Ridge Resort.

Braaten finished the Classic and Freestyle races in a combined 27 minute, 8.1 seconds. Eden Prairie's Benon Brattebo won the Pursuit in 26:00.9. Blaine's Ben Lewis was second and Edina's Andrew Defor placed third.

Braaten's finish was the best state meet placement in the eight-year history of the Spuds' program.

In the Girls Pursuit, the Spuds' Kennedy Olson placed 73rd in 35:43.7. Ely's Zoe Devine won in 30:08.7, Duluth East's Lydia Kraker was second and Math and Science Academy's Greta Hansen was third.

Duluth East won the boys team title with 381 points. Wayzata was second with 339 points. Duluth East also won the girls team championship with 387 points. Stillwater was second with 363.
