Prep football: No. 8 seed Century shocks top-seed Sheyenne in state quarterfinals

The Patriots lost 41-14 to the eight-win Mustangs during the regular season but turned the tables on Friday in the Class 11AA quarterfinals.

WEST FARGO — No. 8 seed Bismarck Century pulled the upset of the young playoff season, dusting top-seed West Fargo Sheyenne 27-8 in the Class 11AA quarterfinals at Essentia Health Mustang Stadium on Friday.

Sheyenne defeated Century 41-14 during the regular season.

Bismarck Century improved to 4-6 overall and moves on to face No. 5 seed Fargo Davies in the Class 11AA semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4. Sheyenne finished the season 8-2.

Fargo Davies 35, Bismarck Legacy 7
BISMARCK — No. 5 seed Davies took down No. 4 seed Legacy on Friday and earned a home game in the semifinals as a result of top-seed West Fargo Sheyenne’s upset loss to No. 8 seed Bismarck Century.

Davies improved to 7-3 overall and will play host to Century in the Class 11AA semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4. Legacy finished 6-4 overall.


Mandan 34, West Fargo 18
MANDAN — No. 2 seed Mandan defeated No. 7 seed West Fargo in the Class 11AA quarterfinals on Friday night.

West Fargo finished the season 4-6 while Mandan improved to 8-2 and plays No. 3 Fargo Shanley in the Class 11AA semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4.

Fargo North 30, Valley City 28
VALLEY CITY — Three Peder Haugo touchdown runs in the second half helped No. 5 seed North overcome an 11-point deficit and down seven-win and No. 4 seed Valley City in the Class 11A quarterfinals on Friday.

North trailed 14-10 at halftime and Valley City’s Zach Sykora scored on a 12-yard run for the first score of the second half and a 21-10 lead.

But Haugo scored the second of his four rushing touchdowns on a nine-yard run to make it 21-17 Valley City, and Haugo later ran in from 10 yards out to put North ahead 24-21.

Haugo scored on a 28-yard run in the fourth quarter to put the Spartans up 30-21. Valley City pulled close on Gavin Gerhardt’s three-yard TD run but North held on for the win.

In addition to Haugo’s four scores, Max Watson hit a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter.

North improved to 6-4 overall and the Spartans will play top-seed Fargo South in a Class 11A semifinals game on Friday, Nov. 4. Valley City finished the season 7-3.
