Prep softball: Spuds hold off St. Cloud to remain afloat in section playoffs

Moorhead took a three-run lead in the sixth and survived the seventh for a Section 8AAAA win on Thursday.

MOORHEAD — Moorhead kept its head above water with a 6-5 win over the St. Cloud Crush in a Section 8AAAA elimination game on Thursday.

The Spuds broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fifth, then added a much-needed run in the sixth. The Crush rallied for two runs in the seventh before Moorhead put the game on ice.

Moorhead's Maddie Spaeth was 2 for 4 and drove in two runs and Avery Babolian, Taylor Kressin and Emily Van Raden all doubled. Kressin, Kate Gulbranson, Kayla Kraft and Van Raden all drove in runs.

The No. 5-seed Spuds play No. 3 Elk River at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, in another elimination game in Brainerd.
