MOORHEAD — Moorhead hockey has played in four-straight state tournaments. To stretch that run to five, the Spuds will use a new-look roster.

"Sky’s the limit really for these guys," said senior defenseman Colby Krier.

Excitement surrounds this year’s Moorhead boys hockey team and a roster riddled with young talent

"Teams may be different and the kids might be next generation, but our expectations don’t change," said head coach Jon Ammerman.

The Spuds graduated eight seniors from last season. Plus, lost three would-be seniors to USHL rosters.

"There's a lot of eager minds. A lot of kids that are excited to learn," Ammerman said. "Our compete is not bad for this point in season, but there's also a lot of room for growth."

Moorhead is leaning on a group of core veterans. That includes leading returning goal scorer Aaron Reierson.

"Definitely a lot of learning curves for them, but the older guys have stepped up a lot and taught our younger guys how things work around here," Reierson said.

The Spuds are 2-3 after a gauntlet of a schedule to start the season. With losses to blue bloods like defending champ Andover on Friday.

"It was good for us to play them early in the season so this week and weeks to come we know what we need to work on and what to change," Reierson said.

It’s all part of their quest for another shot in the state tournament.

"We know what we can do," Krier said. "We've got a lot of Young talent. We've got old guys helping out the younger guys. Obviously, these last few years we've had a lot of success, so I know what we can do."
