West Fargo pitcher Caleb Anderson dominant in EDC opener

The Packers defeated Grand Forks Red River in the first round of the Eastern Dakota Conference Tournament on Tuesday behind Anderson's stellar work on the mound.

WEST FARGO — West Fargo couldn't have asked for a better kickoff to the Eastern Dakota Conference baseball championships.

Packers pitcher Caleb Anderson remained virtually unhittable and a three-run fifth inning was the knockout punch in a 4-0 victory over Grand Forks Red River on Tuesday.

Anderson narrowly missed a no-hitter, allowing only a single in the fifth inning. Anderson only allowed three base runners total, didn't issue a walk and struck out 13. He set the Roughriders down in order in five innings and retired the final seven Red River batters to close the game.

The Packers scored the eventual game-winner in the second inning when Aiden Wolf led off with a single. He took second on a balk, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Seth Wigestrand's single to center.

West Fargo added insurance in the fifth. Anderson singled to lead off and Landon Troftgruben came in as a courtesy runner. Brady Medina reached on an error and he and Troftgruben both scored on another Red River error to make it 3-0. Wrigley Gunderson then singled in a fourth run.

Anderson was 3 for 4 with a double, Wigestrand was 2 for 3 with the RBI and Wolf singled and had an RBI. Gunderson and Mason Stoelting had the Packers' other hits.

West Fargo, the No. 3 seed, moves on to No. 2 Fargo Shanley in the EDC championship semifinals on Friday while Grand Forks Red River plays No. 7 Fargo Davies in the consolation semifinals on Friday. All Friday games are at John Randall Field in Wahpeton.

West Fargo Sheyenne 9, Devils Lake 3

WEST FARGO — West Fargo Sheyenne put the hammer down with a five-run second inning and coasted to a first round win over Devils Lake in the EDC tournament on Tuesday.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Casey Clemenson's RBI single to center.

After Sheyenne starter Caleb Duerr set Devils Lake down in order in the top of the second, Ben Clouse got the Mustangs' big inning started with a one-out single to left. Carter Carlson followed with an RBI double and Trey Stocker doubled to put runners on second and third. Jackson Glienke's fielder's choice brought home another run and Duerr doubled to left to score Stocker and Glienke. Konner Entz then singled in a run to make it 6-0.

Devils Lake closed the gap with three runs in the fifth but the Mustangs answered with three of their own in the home half. Sheyenne loaded the bases on two walks and a single with Duerr doubling again to clear the bases.

Duerr was 2 for 4 with five RBI, Entz was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Stocker had two hits.

Duerr pitched two-hit ball over four innings to get the win. He didn't issue a walk and struck out eight. Parker Henrich went the final inning, striking out two.

Sheyenne, the EDC's top seed, plays No. 4 Wahpeton in the championship semifinals on Friday in Wahpeton. No. 8 Devils Lake plays No. 5 Fargo North in the consolation semis on Friday.

Wahpeton 4, Fargo North 1

WAHPETON — Wahpeton's Jackson Fliflet hit a walk-off three-run home run to lead the Huskies to the win in the EDC tournament's opening round on Tuesday.

Wahpeton scored a run in the bottom of the first and North tied it in the second when Benson Grande walked, Nolan Astrup followed with a single and Grande scored on Joey Bjorkman's sacrifice bunt.

Except for some walks, the pitchers ruled from that point. North's Charlie Kalbrener went the first six, allowing an unearned run on two hits, walking four and striking out eight. Wahpeton starter Jayden King went 5-1/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits. He walked five and struck out eight.

In the seventh, Wahpeton's Myles Hinkley drew a one-out walk and Gavin Schroeder walked with two outs. Fliflet followed with the game-winning home run to left.

North, the No. 5 seed, plays No. 8 Devils Lake in the consolation semifinals on Friday in Wahpeton. Wahpeton, the No. 4 seed, plays top seed West Fargo Sheyenne in the championship semifinals on Friday.

Fargo Shanley 5, Fargo Davies 2

FARGO — All the game's runs were scored in the fourth inning, with Fargo Shanley overcoming Fargo Davies' two-run lead and holding on for the win in a first round game in the EDC tournament on Tuesday.

Shanley's Landon Meier was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Sam Ovsak had the Deacons' other RBI. Tommy Simon, Michael Rostberg, Zach Boren and Quinn Miller had the team's other hits.

Shanley starter Jordan Leininger went 5-1/3 innings to get the win. He allowed two runs on five hits, he walked four and struck out seven. Reliever Landon Hale got the final five outs, striking out two.

Davies' Evan Erickson had a hit and two RBI and Jaxon Beiswenger doubled. Carsen Barta, Chayse Keller and Matthew Nelson had the Eagles' other hits. Wyatt Kosidowski took the loss. He allowed two earned runs on five hits over 5-1/3 innings. Paul Narum got the final two outs.

Shanley, the No. 2 seed, plays No. 3 West Fargo in the championship semifinals on Friday. Davies, the No. 7 seed, plays No. 6 Grand Forks Red River in the consolation semis on Friday.
