Despite having a strong preseason, T.Y. McGill won’t be on the Vikings’ 53-man roster.

The Vikings on Monday placed the veteran defensive lineman on injured reserve. McGill had 3 1/2 sacks in the first two exhibition games, but was knocked out of the finale Saturday night at Denver with an ankle injury. McGill’s injury was not initially considered serious, but a source said he would be going for a second opinion. An injury settlement remains a possibility.

The Vikings made five moves Monday to get their roster down to 75 players. They must be at the NFL regular-season limit of 53 by 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Vikings terminated the contract of cornerback Tye Smith and waived wide receiver Myron Mitchell and tackle Timon Parris. They also officially placed wide receiver Bisi Johnson on injured reserve after it was learned Sunday that he would be out for a second straight season after suffering another torn ACL.

Smith had been released two weeks ago, but the Vikings re-signed him last week because they needed depth at cornerback for the preseason finale at Denver.

Mitchell and Parris both spent time last season on the practice squad. It remains to be seen if either will be a candidate for the 2022 practice squad.

McGill has played seven seasons in the NFL, getting into two games last season with the Vikings. The Vikings didn’t bring him back immediately after the season but then re-signed him in March. He was the first player signed after Kwesi Adofo-Mensah took over as general manager in January.
