LAS VEGAS — The Vikings didn’t play 10 starters in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.

Entering Sunday, it was known that two players were out — quarterback Kirk Cousins, who tested positive Thursday for COVID-19, and tight end Irv Smith Jr., who is out for the entire preseason with a thumb injury. Players who sat out but are not injured were running back Dalvin Cook, wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen, cornerback Patrick Peterson, safety Harrison Smith, and linebackers Eric Kendricks, Za’Darius Smith and Danielle Hunter.

On Sunday, the Vikings will be back in London, facing the New Orleans Saints at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Four players remain from the 2017 team who will play again in England: edge rusher Danielle Hunter, linebacker Eric Kendricks, safety Harrison Smith and wide receiver Adam Thielen.

The injury is similar to the one Cook suffered Nov. 28, 2021 at San Francisco. He sat out a Dec. 5 game at Detroit before returning to rush for 205 yards on Dec. 9 against Pittsburgh while wearing a shoulder harness.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound receiver out of LSU will be the focus of most, if not all opposing defenses for the rest of the season. He’s just that good. With Jefferson taken out of the offense, Adam Thielen (six catches, 61 yards and a touchdown) and Osborn (5-73-1) got the lion’s share of Cousins’ targets, which was enough to beat the Lions on Sunday.

It wasn’t always pretty, but it was a good win. An important win, particularly for a team still finding its legs. There’s a big difference between 2-1 and 1-2.

The Vikings also announced before the game that offensive lineman Chris Reed, defensive lineman Julian Taylor and wide receiver Thomas Hennigan wouldn’t play.

Minnesota started its regular offensive line, including using Jesse Davis at right guard over rookie Ed Ingram. Starting center Garrett Bradbury was backed up in the game by Austin Schlottmann. Reed, who has played mostly a guard in his NFL career, has been taking some snaps in practice at center in practice, and there has been speculation he could push Bradbury to start.

With Harrison Smith out, rookie Lewis Cine started at alongside Camryn Bynum. Cine was Minnesota’s top draft pick, taken with the No. 32 selection in the first round.
