RedHawks ground Flyers, extend win string to 5

Nic Jackson's Northern League-best 14-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-4 while Fargo-Moorhead extended its winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory over Schaumburg on Wednesday at Newman Outdoor Field.

Nic Jackson's Northern League-best 14-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-4 while Fargo-Moorhead extended its winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory over Schaumburg on Wednesday at Newman Outdoor Field.

After appearing in seven games as a reliever, T.J. Stanton (1-1) made his first start of the season for the RedHawks in front of an announced crowd of 3,289. He threw 58 pitches in six innings allowing two hits and one unearned run. He also struck out two, while walking a batter.

"I felt pretty good," said Stanton. "We have been working on some stuff mechanically and it is coming around a little bit. With our offence we know all we have to do is stay close because we are going to start scoring a ton more runs."

It is most likely that Stanton will stay in the rotation said RedHawks head coach Doug Simunic.

"He pitched six strong innings," said Simunic. "We know what he can do, we have confidence in him. For the most part he was very effective."

His pitching rival Alain Quijano (0-3), a Faribault Minn., native, went 6Zc innings giving up three runs while striking out five on 94 pitches.

The first run of the game was scored by the RedHawks' Zach Penprase.

After being walked to leadoff the fourth inning, he stole second base and advanced to third of a throwing error by The Flyers catcher. He was knocked in by a Nic Jackson ground out to the right side.

The Flyers tied the game when a walk was issued to Joe Pauley to start the sixth inning. The next batter laid down a sacrifice bunt which was thrown away down the right field line by Stanton allowing Pauley to score all the way from first without a throw.

The RedHawks gave the bullpen some breathing room with two runs in the seventh inning.

Jesse Hoorelbeke led off with a monster double off of the left field wall and advanced to third on a ground out. He scored on a soft pop-fly double from Carlo Cota to no man's land behind first base just off the glove of the second baseman as he collided with the first baseman.

Cory Patton then hit a single to driving in Cota.

"We ran into a team that doesn't score a lot of run, so that helped us," said Simunic. "We were able to keep them off the board ... the guys we put out there really contributed."

Jake Krause, a recently signed Moorhead native and 2010 Concordia College (Minn.) graduate, got some playing time replacing Jay Cox at third base in the eighth inning but he didn't get a chance to bat in the game.

The RedHawks look to complete a four-game sweep of the Flyers at 7:02 p.m. today.

The probable F-M starter is Scott Fogelson, who is tied for the league lead in strikeouts (23), and Schaumburg's Dustin Glant.
