BRISBANE, Queensland — Donny Schatz kicked off 2020 by claiming the checkered flag on New Year's Day at Archerfield Speedway. The win was Schatz’s third win in as many starts at the track.
“I had a solid race car at the end. It felt really good, but I had to keep myself out of trouble,” Schatz said after the race.
Schatz’s fourth-place finish in the dash put him on the outside of the second row for the 35-lap main event.
In the second half of the race, Schatz moved into second and set his sights on Luke Oldfield for the lead. Schatz was closing in on Oldfield until Oldfield jumped the cushion, nearly got upside down, and brought out the caution. Schatz was able to avoid Oldfield and inherit the lead for the ensuing restart.
“Luke (Oldfield) was setting a really good pace, but jumped the cushion which was really easy to do tonight,” Schatz said. “My guys did a great job. We got ourselves in a little bit of trouble in the heats and banged up a few things, but we’ll get everything straightened up and be back Saturday.”

Schatz’s next event will be Saturday, Jan. 4, at Archerfield Speedway. It will be the first of three consecutive events featuring the World Series Sprint Cars — Australia's version of the World of Outlaws.
