Newly hired Minnesota State Moorhead football coach Steve Laqua didn't take long to get a start of his first recruiting class, getting a verbal commitment from Fargo Shanley all-state quarterback Myles Montplaisir.

A three-year starter, Montplaisir helped the Deacons to the past two North Dakota Class 2A state championships with Laqua as his head coach.

Laqua, was named MSUM coach on Friday, was the head coach at Shanley the past four seasons.

"He is a person that I loved playing for and I wanted to continue playing for," said Montplaisir, who was the Class 2A senior player of the year.

Montplaisir said Concordia and St. Thomas were among his final choices. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Montplaisir passed for nearly 1,800 yards and 28 touchdowns in his final prep season. He also added 850 yards rushing and 11 TDs.
