ST. JOSEPH, Minn. — Concordia pitcher Megan Gavin has been solid all season but she came up big in the Cobbers' biggest game of the season to date on Thursday.
Gavin two-hit St. Benedict, striking out seven in a classic pitchers' duel as the Cobbers moved on in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-0 win.
Gavin (10-10) battled St. Benedict ace Elly Novak (17-3) through six scoreless innings. But in the top of the seventh, Concordia's Kate Wensloff hit a leadoff single and Landry Maragos pinch ran. Maragos moved up on a ground out and Riley Bergstrom laced a two-out double to score Maragos with the game's first run. Kenzie Leither then singled in Bergstrom.
The Blazers put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Gavin got a strikeout and a pop up to end the game.
The No. 6-seed Cobbers (22-19) now face top-seed and tournament host St. Olaf at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 14, in Northfield, Minn.
