GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Katie Thingelstad's first shot of the game wasn't pretty.

The Fargo South center's baseline drive and scoop shot found its way behind the backboard seconds into the quarterfinals of the Eastern Dakota Conference girls basketball tournament.

"Yeah, it was a little nerve-racking right away," Thingelstad said.

But the jitters became a distant memory as the top-seeded Bruins put five players in double-figures in a 71-33 triumph over cross-town rival Fargo North on Thursday at the Alerus Center.

"That was the favorite role," said South coach Craig Flaagan of the opening moments. "It does give you added pressure. But once we got into the flow, we were fine."

The Bruins used a 14-2 run to end the first quarter, grabbing a 16-4 edge. By halftime, South had forced 22 turnovers, was shooting at a 60 percent clip from the floor and held a 14-point advantage.

"It started with good passing and defense," Thingelstad said. "Our teamwork has been really great."

The statistics support her claim.

Thingelstad was joined by Cammi Greenheck, Rachel Wagner, Joslynn Tharaldson and Melanie Hageman in scoring 10 or more points.
