Spuds dealt defeat

BLAINE, Minn - Moorhead boys hockey coach Dave Morinville eluded to his team's first-period play for the answer to why his team lost its first game of the season Tuesday against Centennial.

BLAINE, Minn - Moorhead boys hockey coach Dave Morinville eluded to his team's first-period play for the answer to why his team lost its first game of the season Tuesday against Centennial.

Despite scoring first, he said that his team came out flat, something that it was never able to break out of.

"We were not very good in the first period," Morinville said. "We have had a lot better first periods than we played tonight, and I think it caught up with us."

Although they had an early lead, the No. 1-ranked Spuds, were unable to maintain it and lost 4-3 to the Cougars (5-3) in the quarterfinals of the Schwan Cup at the Xcel Energy Center.

Centennial's Jordan Singer had a hat trick, including the game-winning goal with 9:57 remaining in the third period.

"He played pretty good," Morinville said. "We had a lot of chances, but we just couldn't finish."

The Spuds (7-1) outshot Centennial 35-27.

Centennial is unranked in the Minnesota Class 2A poll.

"They are a good team," Morinville said. "I have been telling people all year that I didn't think we were worthy of the No. 1 ranking everyone was giving us."

Moorhead will play at 3 p.m. today against Bloomington Jefferson, which lost to White Bear Lake 7-3 on Tuesday.

Bloomington Jefferson defeated the Spuds 6-1 last season.

"It's not the end of the season, hopefully we can grow up and learn from it," Morinville said. "It will be interesting to see how we play tomorrow."
