Fargo Shanley's senior leaders were steady again. However, it was the youngsters who provided the knockout blow on Saturday.
Freshman Patrick Strom and sophomore A.J. Jacobson combined for 21 second-half points, including 12 in a pivotal run, to help the No. 5 Deacons to a runaway 75-60 Eastern Dakota Conference boys basketball win against Fargo South at McCormick Gymnasium.
"It's nice to have a guy like Pat there who can knock down shots with a hand in his face - or with a hand not in his face," Jacobson said. "He's played really well for us these past few games."
South (9-7, 9-5 EDC) stuck around for much of the first half.
The Bruins, who have lost four of their last five games to drop three games behind league-leading Fargo North, had Shanley on the ropes and clinging to a 26-24 lead with 3 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the first half.
But things quickly got away.
The Deacons (12-4, 11-4 EDC) pulled away from there, taking a 36-28 lead into halftime.
"We wanted to come out strong because they beat us earlier this year," Jacobson said.
South cut Shanley's lead to 40-38 with 14:48 remaining when the Deacons made their final push.
Strom scored nine points in about 2 minutes, and Jacobson added a 3-pointer, to make the score 55-45.
The game got out of hand late when South guard David Charles was called for his fifth foul and second technical foul of the game with 5.8 seconds remaining.
Shanley senior Josh Rodenbiker drilled four free throws to end the game.
Gabe Deng finished with 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bruins.
Jacobson had 18 and Strom had 14 for Shanley.
"We're missing layups and they are making threes," South coach Mike Hendrickson said. "That's the way it's gone. We've been in a funk for the last two weeks here. We have to find ways to get out of it."
