Third-period barrage leads UND to exhibition victory

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - North Dakota scored two goals in the first 88 seconds of the third period to break a tie and cruise to a 7-1 win over Manitoba in exhibition college hockey Sunday.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - North Dakota scored two goals in the first 88 seconds of the third period to break a tie and cruise to a 7-1 win over Manitoba in exhibition college hockey Sunday.

The teams were tied 1-1 after two periods when the Sioux struck 24 seconds into the third. Jake Marto scored from close range after taking a return pass from Evan Trupp. Sixty-four seconds later, the lead grew to 3-1 as Jason Gregoire was set up at the top of the crease by Chris VandeVelde's pass.

Then Mario Lamoureux, Chay Genoway, Michael Cichy and Brett Hextall added goals for the Sioux.

The Bisons led 1-0 after one period on David Brown's slapshot from the slot. UND answered with the second period's only goal when freshman Danny Kristo batted in the rebound of VandeVelde's shot.

Steve Christie made 34 saves for Manitoba while Brad Eidsness (11 saves) and Aaron Dell (four) split time for the Sioux.
