GRAND FORKS — When Grand Forks Red River sophomore Shri Patel isn't burning rubber on the track, she's using her talents for something bigger than herself.

She's thriving in two of her passions - science and track and field.

Patel first jumped into a UND epigenetics lab, where she studied unknown genes that cause diseases like cancer and diabetes.

She's been competing locally, most recently placing 69th at the North Dakota Science and Engineering Fair in April.

"All these real world problems... I would love to solve one of these problems in the future," said Patel.

She'll have the chance to make a significant step in doing so, and share her findings nationally at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 12.

It's the world's largest international pre-college science competition.
